How to eat well on the road
Eating healthily on the road is a mighty challenge, but a few good road rules will pave the way.
Eating healthy on the road is a mighty challenge. A few good road rules will help pave the way. Most everyone knows that the easiest way to get food on the road is by stopping off at one of the zillions of fast food restaurants lining the major highways. Greasy burgers, salty fries, highly sweetened soft drinks, and high-fat desserts can be found at just about any restaurant, eatery, dining area, or rest stop along the road.
If you're like the average American, you'll just pass your cash over the counter and accept your food in return. Then you can hammer down one of America's favorite and longest lasting novelties -junk food!
But wait a minute. What if your cardiologist told you NO WAY - you'll die if you keep munching on junk food. What if your cancer doctor told you that changing your nutritional habits could help save your life? What if you refuse to feed your children more sugar and more fats? Whatever your reason, you might be one of those Americans who has had enough of junk food. But how do you go on a road trip and avoid the pitfalls?
If you simply MUST stop at a fast food restaurant because you simply CANNOT see any other choice, then try a few of these food tips. They just might make a difference.
- choose grilled chicken at a fast food restaurant instead of fried food
- pick a salad and hold back on the high-fat dressing
- forget the fries and ask for a baked potato
Sure, you probably know all about those little tricks. But suppose you don't want to just cut corners. Suppose you want to make a significant change and eat really WELL on the road.
If you are ready to take this next step and are truly committed to it, then try some tried and true advice. Hopefully it will help.
- go to the health food section of your local grocery store or supermarket and buy a bunch of ready made meals in a cup. By simply adding water, you can have a delicious, steaming hot, and inexpensive dish of health macaroni, noodles, soup, chili, etc.
- fill a bag, crate, or box with an assortment of yummy, healthy foods. You can buy these at your local health food store, although most food stores now have health food sections. Try fruit sweetened cookies, cakes, and puddings. Buy jars of no-sugar jams, low-fat peanut butters, and delicious grain breads.
- bring along plastic knives, forks, cups, and plates.
- get a six-pack of bottled water. You'll save much money along the way if you bring your own water.
- don't forget a can opener. Can openers always come in handy when you least expect it.
- bring a hot pot if you know you'll have a place to plug it in. If not, stop off at gas stations for your hot water to add to your cups of lunches and dinners.
- for breakfast, pack fresh bagels, low-fat muffins, cereals, and soy milk. Soy milk doesn't have to be refridgerated and can be stored in your hotel room or in your car.
There are plenty of ways to eat healthily on the road if you truly have the desire and ambition.
If you want to stop off a bunch of times at restaurants, choose restaurants that have vegetarian foods, low-fat foods, etc. Pick diners instead of fast food restaurants and ask for low-fat foods if necessary.
Over time, you will learn how to make healthier choices. The internet is also a great tool for finding out ahead of time where to stop for food. Many towns now have super health food stores. You can go grocery shopping on the way if you run out of the foods you packed along.
It is said that "where there is a will, there is a way." Plenty of people use road trips as an excuse to binge, eat junk foods, and treat their bodies poorly.
Move over junk food. More and more people are committing to healthier lifestyles, and traveling on a road trip doesn't have to be a roadblock. Each time you take a trip, you'll learn new ways of eating more healthily along the road. Drive safely, and happy healthy eating!
