Is "natural" really natural?
Times are changing, but everyone still wants to be beautiful. Every woman wants to look young and striking. Men just like women are also taking care of themselves. That’s why everyone is buying cosmetics. All of us are using more or less make-up and body care products.
So, it’s the right time to have discussion about natural cosmetics. Word “cosmetics” includes skin, hair, nails and teeth care products. Nowadays cosmetics industry is using term “natural”, but is this “natural” really natural, safe and useful for us?
Let’s make one simple experiment. Take some of your cosmetics which are called “natural” and read place where ingredients are declared. Most likely you will find a lot of interesting and mysterious chemical words. How can it be so if product is natural?
This aspect shows that word “natural” not always means truly natural and is only nice advertisement for manufacturing company. In fact they also include a multitude of synthetic ingredients. We must always check our cosmetic products if they don’t contain any of carcinogens,cancer-causing agents, toxins, irritants, contaminants or potentially harmful ingredients.
In our daily life there are tens of thousands of synthetic chemicals.
Fragrance
Some perfumes use pheromones from the animal world. "Civetone", for example, comes from both male and female civet cats and musk comes from male musk oxen. Both pheromones are used to mark territory and to attract the attention of the opposite sex. Human urine has been found to contain a substance with a strong musk-like smell.
Men's urine contains twice as much of this substance as women's urine. The substance
smells like a scent that women pay particular attention to during ovulation. There's
a fatty acid in women's vaginal fluids that is similar to the sex attracting substances
of other mammals.
A perfume's scent changes as time goes by. The reason is that certain
scents in perfume evaporate at different stages. That's why the smells aren't all
sensed at the same time.
Perfume manufacturers divide the process into three phases:
1) "The Main Scent" -
the most fleeting substances that evaporate within an hour.
2) "The Heart Scent"
- less fleeting substances that last for almost 3 hours.
3) "The Body of the Scent
- the least fleeting substances that last up to 20 hours.
One perfume doesn't smell
the same on two people because their sweat mixes with the perfume.
Ninety-five percent of the chemicals in today's perfumes have a petroleum base. These are the same toxic chemicals that are on the hazardous waste lists of the EPA (Environmental Protective Agency),The report is called, "Polar Organic Compounds in Fragrances of Consumer Products". Of the fragrances tested in this analyses, Giorgio cologne for men, Giorgio perfume, and Chantilly spray mist contained ninety percent of the chemicals listed in the EPA's hazardous waste list.
Fragrances exist because people enjoy them. They enjoy wearing them and hope that others enjoy smelling them. I don't "hate" fragrances-I just can't tolerate them (my respiratory system reacts to them.) It's a health issue for me, and I'm not alone. We all share the same airspace. Do we all have rights to that airspace? In other words, if you are in my office, and you repeatedly wear a fragrance that makes me physically ill, do I have any right to tell you to leave my office area? Even more drastically-can I sue you for polluting my air? It's been done- and we'll look into that next time.
Homemade health and beauty products
Recipe, instructions and ingredients for homemade soap, sunburn relief, mouthwash, toothpaste and beauty powders.
It’s fun to make your own lotions, powders, bubble bath and facial preparations. Not only can you experiment with various formulas until you perfect one just to your liking, you can also choose your own beautiful jars and decanters. Discount stores are full of uniquely shaped bottles and other containers for storing your new creations. You can label the potions by printing cute stickers from your home printer or purchasing blank adhesive labels for writing.
You can get recipes for bath and body products online or in library books, or rework some of these to suit your taste. Here’s a few to get you started:
Soap:
Make your own soap flakes by saving small bars of used soap and after drying, slice into small slivers. When the soap begins getting small, wash the soap well and place on a paper towels. After most of the water is absorbed, place the soap in a breathable container with others until you have enough to use for making new soaps. You can also purchase soap flakes rather than use old bars.
Mix and simmer 1 cup of soap flakes, 1 tablespoon of glycerin and a quart of water until the flakes are dissolved. Pour into a jar and let cool. Adjust the consistency of the soap by adding more or less water. Add essential oils or soap fragrances, found at craft stores.
You can make soap with glycerin which is found in cakes at craft stores and melted in a pot. Add 8 to 10 drops of essential oils to the melted glycerin, a drop or two of food colouring, then pour into moulds.
Powder:
Arrowroot powder works great to give a feeling of dryness. Sprinkle essential oils into arrowroot powder. Mix well and allow to dry for a couple of days, covered. Mix again and put the powder through a flour sifter to break up any lumps.
A cup of cornstarch, four tablespoons each of arrowroot powder and baking soda is mixed together to make a very nice powder. If you want scent, add essential oils, let dry and sift.
Mouthwash:
Boil a cup of water. Remove from heat and add a teaspoon each of ground cinnamon and parsley, along with a whole clove. Let the ingredients sit in the hot water for 15 minutes. Remove and strain, add a teaspoon of peppermint extract. Other extracts can be used instead of peppermint.
Toothpaste:
Mix one-half cup of bicarbonate of soda with one-sixth cup of salt. Add six teaspoons of glycerine and enough water to make a thick paste. Add several drops of peppermint extract or a different flavor to improve the taste.
Sunburn Relief:
Grow an aloe Vera plant and keep it healthy. Should sunburn occur, break off a stalk and squeeze the juice onto the burn. Or use a half-cup of water with two teaspoons of vinegar to wipe on the sunburn. You can also pour a cup of raw oats into a warm bath. Soak for twenty to thirty minutes and pat dry. Or have a tea bath by dropping three to four tea bags in bath water
How to get rid of cellulite -forever!
Do you want to get rid of cellulite? Follow this program and no longer worry about unsightly, lumpy cellulite.
You’ve seen those ads—
‘This disgustingly smelly cream guaranteed to rid you of unsightly cellulite!’
Wear this hot, tight, uncomfortable garment for an interminably long time each day and your cellulite will disappear like magic!’
(Well, that’s what those ads should say.)
Now, fitness researchers have jumped on this bandwagon. They’ve come up with a fairly simple exercise program that they say will get rid of cellulite. But there’s one difference between their cure and the ones you’ll see in magazine ads: The fitness experts aren’t trying to sell you anything.
What is cellulite, anyway?
It’s nothing but regular, old fat. In areas of your body where you have a high proportion of fat to muscle (like women’s thighs, hips, and buttocks), a lot of the fat is trapped between the muscle and the skin and begins to look lumpy. The fibrous or connective tissue that holds your muscles, fat, and skin together is what you are seeing when you see the lumpy, pocked look of cellulite. Some women have more fibrous or connective tissue than others, making the ‘cottage cheese’ look of cellulite more pronounced. Cellulite can worsen with age, too, because you tend to lose muscle as you get older, causing your body to have a higher proportion of fat to muscle.
So what’s the cure for cellulite?
Well, it’s not a pill, or a cream, or a rubber garment that you squeeze on over your body. It’s a simple, easy exercise program.
A group of 23 women that were enrolled in a two-month exercise program saw significant decreases in cellulite at the end of the study. The women ranged in age from 23 to 66 and were all in varying levels of fitness. They were all fairly sedentary at the outset of the program, however, and they all had cellulite on their hips, thighs, or buttocks that they expressed an interest in decreasing or getting rid of altogether.
The women in the study exercised for thirty minutes, three times a week, for the two months required. At the end of the program, all of the women in the study had lost cellulite and expressed satisfaction with the exercise program. In fact, 73% of the women experienced ‘a lot less cellulite’ on their hips, thighs, and buttocks. The age and fitness levels of the women experiencing ‘a lot less cellulite’ again varied greatly.
The study was conducted three more times, each time following the same program and length of study, and each time there was a significant loss of cellulite in each of the women in the study.
Here’s the program that they followed:
1. 15 minutes of aerobic exercise should be done: i.e, walking on the treadmill, riding a bicycle or using a stepper. Always do a 2-minute warm-up before and a 2-minute cool-down after the aerobic exercise. This reduces the risk of injury to your muscles while exercising.
2. Do 15 minutes of strength exercises or weight training at a weight that fatigues the muscle within ten repetitions. Start out with light weights, then as the program goes on, raise the weight to a higher level.
Do ten repetitions of each exercise for the targeted muscle. If, for example, your thighs are the part of your body that is lumpy with cellulite, you should use an exercise specifically designed for thighs, such as leg lifts or side-lying leg lifts. Or use an exerciser specifically designed for thighs such as a thigh master.
If you want to rid your buttocks of cellulite, do lunges, or squats. Adding one to five pound weights to your ankles, holding light weights at your side, or working out on a weight machine is suggested, though you can start the program by doing the exercises without added weights. The people in the study, however, all had much better results when they used hand or ankle weights or exercised on weight machines, as opposed to doing the exercises without the added weights.
3. Stretch out the muscle for 20 seconds after each set of 10 repetitions of the exercise. This is a very important part of the exercise program. Stretching out the muscle after the exercises helps to increase the length and flexibility of the muscle, and this will help to increase your strength. The more strength that you have, the easier the exercises become, and the more muscle you build. The more muscle you build, the less cellulite you will have.
And that’s it. It’s not a miracle cure for cellulite, but it is a cure nonetheless. It requires a little work and dedication, but the results will be worth it. The women who participated in the studies all expressed satisfaction with the amount of cellulite that they lost during the two months of the program. Fitness experts believe that you will also be pleased with the smoother thighs, hips and buttocks that you will have if you follow this program. And if you continue this program three times a week, your cellulite may not ever come back.
